If those services don’t trust me enough to give me an RSS feed, why should I trust them with my data?
I am trying to accept myself for them. I am trying to show my kids that there are so many ways to be healthy and beautiful. And as for bikini season, here is what I recommend for obtaining a bikini body: 1) Have a body, and 2) Put a bikini on it. It doesn’t matter what kind of fruit you’re shaped like. You get to do whatever the fuck you want.
It all comes down to that urge to fascism — maybe a big word to use for art, but I think the right word — it comes down to that urge to fascism to know what’s best for people, to know that some people are of the best and some people are of the worst; the urge to separate the good from the bad and to praise oneself; to decide what covers on what books people ought to read, what songs people ought... to be moved by, what art they ought to make, an urge that makes art into a set of laws that take away your freedom rather than a kind of activity that creates freedom or reveals it. It all comes down to the notion that, in the end, there is a social explanation for art, which is to say an explanation of what kind of art you should be ashamed of and what kind of art you should be proud of. It’s the reduction of the mystery of art, where it comes from, where it goes…
Those who steal fonts will always find easier ways to steal them. Those who focus on making their fonts easy to license and use earn the good will of the market.
art is simply inevitable. It was on the wall of a cave in France 30,000 years ago, and it’s because we are a species that’s driven by narrative. Art is storytelling, and we need to tell stories to pass along ideas and information, and to try and make sense out of all this chaos. And sometimes when you get a really good artist and a compelling story, you can almost achieve that thing that’s... impossible which is entering the consciousness of another human being – literally seeing the world the way they see it. Then, if you have a really good piece of art and a really good artist, you are altered in some way, and so the experience is transformative and in the minute you’re experiencing that piece of art, you’re not alone. You’re connected to the arts.
Miller shows that our problems go far deeper than our devices. Buying more of them or abandoning them altogether are equally futile. Every challenge that may come by way of this fast-paced, digital world is addressed in the words of a book that is thousands of years old.
The further I crawled down the extremist rabbit hole and the more caved-in skulls and headless corpses I saw, the more I found that my natural revulsion, usually an uncontrollable instinct, was easier to suppress.
I can’t make Jesus fit my opinions, I must make my opinions fit Jesus.
Deliverables like lengthy specs, comprehensive wireframes, and pixel-perfect PSDs are all artifacts from a time when risk-averse clients needed to enforce progress and limit variability. Inside of a product company, these efforts waste time, create politics, and mask responsibility.
Graphic design is problem solving through the relationship of form and content.
Ping pong tables and beers don’t count as “good enviroments”. A good enviroment goes beyond that. Personal and professional growth is very important. People want to see progress in their lives, and not just kept on churning the same things over and over.
We have this thing in the industry where we treat creatives as mythic creatures need codes and special tricks to “crack.” But at the end of the day they’re people, albeit people who make a living by putting themselves out there day in and day out, which is a pretty brave and vulnerable thing to do. So respect them. Make sure they have grounds to respect you. Love them. Feed them (figuratively and literally). Reassure them. Be compassionate but call them out on their shit. And no matter what, do your best to keep it positive.
