It's the emptiest and yet the fullest of all human messages:
'Good-bye.'
Bluebeard by Kurt Vonnegut

Several years ago we launched Findings, a new way to collect, annotate and share what you are reading.

Findings. A New Way To Share Book Passages And Web Marginalia.

We placed a bet that reading experiences would become more open and that offering people access to their annotations, regardless of platform, would be useful. Our bet didn’t pay off. As a result, we shifted the Findings product toward the web and away from closed reading apps. While the site developed a small community of devoted users and fans, we never reached the scale that would be required for it to become a self-sustaining business. For that reason, we are closing the doors on Findings.

We’re glad that smart people are still trying to solve the problem, in an open and scalable way. A few weeks ago Kevin Marks wrote a post about “Fragmentions,” a way to link to a particular block of text. (See also his follow-up post.) Whatever the ultimate solutions are, we’re confident that web users will ultimately have better ways to highlight, save, share, and link to information they find meaningful.

Our job is to build and invest in great things at betaworks. Along the way we make multiple bets. Sometimes we get it right and sometimes we don’t. We are proud of what we built at findings. We still believe in the use case — so much so that we have developed it in Instapaper, along with enabling Fragmentions. If you are a Findings user, with a few clicks you can migrate your web clips to Instapaper. If you are an Instapaper user, the highlighting feature is now part of the service.

We've provided links to export your web and book clip data below, along with details on how to import your web clips into Instapaper.

Exporting your Findings Data

Remember me and smile, for it's better to forget than to remember me and cry.

You can export your book clips or your web clips formatted in json.

The export links will be available until September 1st 2014. After that we'll shut findings.com down completely.

Importing your data into Instapaper

Things change. And friends leave. Life doesn't stop for anybody.

Once you have your web clips file downloaded head over your Instapaper account page and upload the file using the "Import from Findings" link.
